Statement by the Board of MvX
7 October 2014
Brussels-- Today, at the heart of a Europe that is caught in a down spiral of multiple crises, a new movement of citizens is born. Movement X (MvX) is the legitimate child of the aspirations of people who believe in a different Europe. MvX is an ambitious movement. We do not want to be witnesses of decay, but the pioneers of a new era, a new place, where diversity is not a ticking bomb, but a source of hope and opportunities. An opportunity to build a society that is cleansed from racism, discrimination, sexism, colonialism, and all other forms of oppression.
The birth of this movement was welcomed by a large number of activists, intellectuals and other individuals. You can read there testimonials and why they support the movement here:
Movement X is the first expression of an assertive multi-ethnic civil rights movement where no group is an alibi serving to hide the ethnocentricity of another. MvX is composed of individual members who are all equal within its ranks. Next to the vision text of the movement (see attachment) the Congress approved five motions that will form a guideline for the struggle of the movement during the coming two years:
Motion 1 : Movement X condemns the Belgian state, its federated entities and the local governments for the failure to implement an effective policy to fight discrimination and systematic exclusion of individuals and groups. The government ignores all national and international reports, recommendations and studies on this subject and consequently opts explicitly to maintain the existing discrimination. Movement X considers this to be a crucial issue and will take initiative towards concrete action.
Motion 2 : Movement X calls upon the responsibility of all societal powers and structures which maintain and reproduce discrimination, racism and exclusion: the educational system, employers, social partners, media, civil society, the cultural sector, social institutions, etc. Movement X will engage in all possible and necessary actions in order to reverse this situation.
Motion 3 : Movement X calls for the introduction of mandatory quantifiable and enforceable employment quota on the employment market for excluded and marginalized groups. This quota must be implemented in all sectors public and private.
Motion 4 : Movement X urges the Belgian state, its federated entities and local governments to take distance from the colonial past. It demands the deletion of all symbols of colonialism from our narrative, educational system, policy and streets. Restitution and compensation must be paid to the formerly colonized countries along with apologies, with as ultimate goal decolonizing our society.
Motion 5 : Movement X calls upon the different governments, academia, social partners, civil society and trade and industry in order to endorse and respect the current BDS-platform text (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions w.r.t. “Israel”).
